Beating the Bounds
This film draws inspiration from the eponymous ritual still performed in Davy's hometown. The film considers ideas of home, identity, safety, violence, tradition, and the supposed dichotomy of idyllic past and complicated present. The film picks at the threads of the concept of home being, as Marina Warner critically posits, “[a] myth [promising] an end to questing, to wandering, to trouble”. Davy set out to fray the edges of this myth, and consider ‘home’ as a concept in flux, in question, and which carries both the promise of comfort and the threat of danger.
